Ways to Enhance Efficiency of Hydrocyclones

1. Determine Structural Parameters

The first and foremost thing to enhance the efficiency is to buy hydrocyclones of appropriate size. Consider the structural parameter based on the slurry which will flow out from the hydro cyclones.

In Hydro cyclones two different material is classified, one is overflow material that comes out of the sieve-like design and another is slurry which is transported from one unit to another through chutes.

When the overflow material is coarse, and the processing capacity of the hydro cyclone is required to be large, it is recommended to use large diameter hydrocyclones. But, if the production capacity is large and the overflow particle is fine then a small hydrocyclone is better. This way you can define the diameter of the hydro cyclone.

Once the hydro cyclone diameter has been determined you can move ahead with other structural parameters such as the diameter of the overflow pipe, diameter of the grit, and height of the cylinder. 1. Choose an Appropriate Feeding Procedure

In general, the feeding process of hydro cyclones includes three feeding procedures.

  • Feeding by Height Difference: Hydrocyclones have inclined surfaces in which the overflow material is poured. Feeding by height difference requires a difference in height by about 5m. Although, this process is difficult to enact in some places when the terrain conditions do not allow it.

  • Feeding by Pressure Stabilizing box: In this process, the material is put inside the hydro cyclone at a stable pressure. However, in this process the problem that most industries faces, it is not cost-effective, and difficult to maintain pressure with a large number of pipelines and pulp flow.

  • Feeding with Slurry Pump: This is the most effective and most common method used by industries. This is an economic procedure, if you can maintain the feeding pressure, it is one of the most efficient processes for enhancing hydrocyclones' efficiency.

2. Clean the Hydrocyclone

After every material classification, the hydrocyclone needs to be cleaned to work efficiently. You can use the screen to separate twigs, grass, sawdust, and other dirt and debris to prevent the screen mesh to be blocked by anything.


3. Maintain Proper Feeding

The concentration of feeding impacts the particle size of the final product. So, if the feed concentration is low, the efficiency of the hydrocyclones increases but the processing capacity decreases.

When the feed concentration is too high, the viscosity of the slurry increases, which impacts the production efficiency, and the production efficiency decreases.

To avoid both of these situations, you should use finer particles and use a lower concentration of the feed.
